Opponents of additional gun restrictions have bottled up bills calling for stricter criminal background checks for gun purchasers. Attempts to find middle ground by focusing on keeping firearms out of the hands of those with mental illness have foundered.House Judiciary Chairman Jeff Barker, D-Aloha, and a critic of gun control, agreed that Tuesday’s shootings would put additional pressure on legislators to deal with the issue.

Rhode Island gun owners packed the Statehouse this week to voice loud opposition to the massive gun control package unveiled earlier this month by Governor Lincoln Chaffee (I), Attorney General Peter Kilmartin (D) and a handful of state lawmakers.  The state Senate Judiciary Committee went into the early morning hours on Friday.  Gun owners turned out en masse to make their voice heard, but we will need to sustain that effort as the action shifts to the state House this week.
